
The Shoong Family Chinese Cultural Center (SFCCC) has been a cornerstone of cultural heritage and community life in Oakland Chinatown since 1953. Its mission is to nurture the next generation through education, cultural celebration, and community building so that young people can thrive. Each week, SFCCC serves more than 500 youth with affordable Cantonese and Mandarin classes, visual and performing arts, sports, leadership, and wellness activities. As a nonprofit community center, it welcomes K–12 students from diverse ethnic and linguistic backgrounds and provides year-round programming. The center primarily supports working-class families in and around Oakland Chinatown.
Overview
We are seeking reliable and caring instructors to support our after-school Chinese language immersion program. This role focuses on helping students with homework, providing general classroom leadership and management along with development of culturally enrichment lessons. The instructors will manage students for two different classes (K - 1st and 2nd grade and up) and play an important role in ensuring a smooth, engaging, and safe after-school learning environment. This position is ideal for college students, recent graduates, or individuals interested in education, bilingual learning, or working with children in a culturally responsive setting.
Duties
- Set weekly learning goals and plan daily instruction activities
- Lead Mandarin immersion lessons for K–3rd grade students, with a focus on listening, speaking, and writing
- Reinforce key vocabulary and concepts covered in students’ daytime Chinese immersion classes
- Provide homework support and academic guidance
- Review students’ classwork and offer constructive feedback
- Practice conversational Mandarin with students and monitor progress
- Encourage full participation through creative and age-appropriate activities
- Design and lead engaging supplemental lessons related to Chinese culture, holidays, arts, and traditions
- Integrate general knowledge topics in culturally responsive ways to enhance learning
- Create a bilingual and bicultural learning environment that supports both language acquisition and identity development
- Supervise students during all after-school activities and transitions
- Maintain a safe, supportive, and respectful environment for all students
- Establish and enforce classroom rules that promote self-discipline and group cooperation
- Manage student behavior and conflicts calmly and fairly
- Track daily attendance and manage early dismissals
- Ensure no student leaves without proper parent/guardian authorization
- Assist with student pick-up service from nearby school campuses
- Ensure safe, timely, and organized transportation to the learning center
- Collect and clean up materials after each session
- Maintain regular communication with parents about student progress or concerns
- Collaborate with the Program Coordinator to ensure alignment with overall program goals
Experience
- Strong Mandarin or Cantonese skills (speaking, reading, and writing in traditional characters) required
- Professional English communication skills
- Experience working with young children
- Ability to engage and manage early learners with varying language backgrounds
- Patience, warmth, and attentiveness to the needs of young children
- Creative and adaptable teaching approach, especially in bilingual learning environments
- Familiarity with classroom management techniques to effectively guide student behavior
- Ability to manage student conflicts inside classroom environment
- Ability to quickly identify and appropriately respond to inappropriate or disruptive behavior or language, using age-appropriate and culturally sensitive guidance
- Punctual, dependable, and responsive to scheduling and communication
- Experience working with students in various capacities such as babysitting, camp counseling, or daycare supervision is advantageous
- Knowledge of first aid practices is a plus for ensuring student safety during sessions
